Intellectual property on the Internet

  • In documents and audiovisual resources, frequent use is made of content taken from the Internet.
  • Good practices in the use of images and audiovisual material consist of using this content lawfully.
  • Free access to content on the Internet does not mean the content can be reused freely (without risk of violating the rights of others).

Internet content can have different legal statuses:

  • Under copyright and “all rights reserved”.
  • Under licenses like Creative Commons and “some rights reserved”.
  • In the public domain or “no rights reserved”.
  • No information about legal status (≠ free use).

What materials am I allowed to reuse?

Open Educational Resources (OER) are educational materials such as textbooks, complete courses, images, infographics, videos and evaluation activities that can be reused in accordance with the license under which they are distributed. Some are in the public domain and some have their own kind of license, but most are offered with a Creative Commons license.
