AI Research Assistant

The Primo search engine AI Research Assistant is a new tool powered by generative artificial intelligence (LLM GPT 3.5) that allows you to explore academic content within the UC3M Library by asking questions in natural language.

This tool searches within selected contents from the library to identify five documents that can help answer your question. AI Research Assistant will extract relevant information from the descriptions or summaries of each source to write the answer. Below the answer, you'll see the sources used to generate it, along with corresponding citations, allowing you to clearly see which source was used to generate each part of the answer. Use these sources to dig deeper into the topic and to fact-check the tool's answers..

Access the AI Research Assistant through a bar on the right side of the screen when the user is logged into the search engine.

When asked a question in natural language, the assistant converts it into two things:

  • On the one hand, it performs a search ("Sources" in the example) within the library's holdings, selecting five featured documents.
  • It then offers an explained answer ("Overview of sources" in the example) based on the selected sources, extracted from the library's holdings.

A summary is displayed for each of the five selected documents, and access to the full text is provided via the search engine:

The search for sources can be limited by document type or by publication date range:

Finally, click on "View more results" to discover more library documents beyond the five selected by performing the following search:

To get the most out of AI Research Assistant, it's essential to ask clear and detailed questions about academic or scientific topics. Be as specific as possible and phrase your inquiry as a question. Ask either in Spanish or English.

Don'ts: Do's:

"Give me interesting articles on bird migration." (Please do not submit requests with critical appraisal; the research assistant will use other criteria.)

"Give me peer-reviewed scientific articles on bird migration" (AI will select as sources scientific papers that show published research with that quality filter). You can also narrow the publication type to "Peer-reviewed".

"Give me the most recent research on climate change" (The AI Assistant may understand that "most recent" is a different time period than the researcher expects).

It is more precise to narrow your search by publication dates when searching in the AI Assistant.

"Can I appeal a traffic ticket from last week?" (The AI assistant cannot analyze or resolve a specific situation; it will answer general questions about traffic laws).

"What is the connection between administrative deadlines and citizens' rights according to legal doctrine? (AI Assistant will provide five legal doctrine publications on this question).

"Has J.D. Salinger’s literature influenced modern cinema? Give me some examples of films available in the library. (The AI will answer the first question by reading publications available in the library and will give examples if these texts mention them, but it cannot also find out if the film is currently available in the library.)

"Has J.D. Salinger's literature influenced modern cinema?" ( AI Assistant will give a justified answer based on the five selected sources.) To find out the availability of films in the library, use the search engine.
